“Intelligence and skill can only function at the peak of their capacity when the body is healthy and strong”
John F Kennedy
"PE makes every child stronger and every life longer."
Sir Steve Redgrave
Why PE is Important
Regular physical activity can help children and adolescents improve cardiorespiratory fitness, build strong bones and muscles, control weight, reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, and reduce the risk of developing health conditions. PE aims to encourage a lifetime love of sport and keeping fit. PE and sport aspires to build determination, passion, respect, honesty, self-belief and teamwork.
National Curriculum Purpose of Study
A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.
What PE Looks Like at Ranworth Primary School
In EYFS opportunities will be provided for children to be active and to develop their co-ordination, control and movement through moving and handling activities which involve the use of a range of equipment and involve different spatial experiences. Pupils in both KS1 and KS2 will engage in lessons of high quality PE each week. In KS1 the curriculum focuses on fundamental movement skills to develop agility, balance and co-ordination. Curriculum content includes ball skills and team games, gymnastic and dance activities. At KS2 pupils will continue to apply and develop a range of skills and units of work which include a range of invasion, net, and fielding and striking games, gymnastics, dance, athletics and swimming. Every year, all children participate in sports day. The emphasis is on enjoyment, participation and team building, with elements of competitiveness. Vocabulary will be explicitly taught at the beginning of every lesson. To facilitate children to know more and remember more key concepts run through the whole of our curriculum, and opportunities to revisit previous learning are planned into every lesson.
All PE lessons/activities are designed and planned to include all children through a range of approaches. Lessons are planned to facilitate the best possible outcome for all children within the class.
